Survival Naturalist Skills 101
The best kind of learning is that which you don’t realize you are learning
This weekly 2 hr long course will center on developing creative expression of some of our most innate survival skills, and observing nature by actually being a part of nature. This course will be led by experienced survival/primitive arts practitioner and naturalist/scientist Clay Kern. During the course participants can expect to be provided leadership and learning opportunities; all wrapped up in fun adventures in the fall/winter forests.
What the course is/isn’t
-Is not canned curriculum
-Will not have a pre-designed end goal in mind
-Will incorporate students desires/goals/interests in steering the class
-Will utilize our senses and observation skills to observe nature and learn scientific ecological concepts and principles
-Will utilize natural items, sketching, and journaling to create and record what we have done, learned and experienced
-Will be targeted to 13-16 year old skill levels
“ The first track is the end of a string. At the far end, a being is moving; a mystery, dropping a hint about itself every so many feet, telling you more about itself until you can almost see it, even before you come to it. The mystery reveals itself slowly, track by track, giving its genealogy early to coax you in. Further on, it will tell you the intimate details of its life and work, until you know the maker of the track like a lifelong friend.”
